For years, Stephanie Wilson kept hearing the same thing from regulars at Swingers, the Beverly Boulevard diner she owns. "People would always comment things like, 'Oh, I wish you guys were on the Eastside,' or, 'Oh, I don't come so often because I moved to Silver Lake or I moved to Echo Park,'" she told Eater LA. So she followed them. Swingers opened a takeout window at 3200 W. Sunset Blvd. on Oct. 20, and since Oct. 21 it has served from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m.
The newest restaurant on Silver Lake's stretch of Sunset is 33 years old. It opened this fall, within weeks of two nearby rooms with much longer histories closing. Put the three side by side and you get a pattern that shows up again and again in Silver Lake and Los Feliz. The buildings last. The names on them keep changing.
The corner at Sunset and Descanso, tenant by tenant
The Los Angeles Times puts Swingers at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Descanso Drive, in the building that was once All Day Baby. The corner's recent history moves fast:
- All Day Baby, the diner from Lien Ta and chef Jonathan Whitener, built a large following here and closed in 2024.
- Heavy Handed, a smash burger spot, opened in March 2025 and closed in spring 2026, about a year later.
- Swingers started takeout on Oct. 20, 2026.
- The Swingers dining room is planned for December. Once it opens, hours run from 8 a.m. to 3 a.m.
That makes three operators in about two years, and the newest one is also the oldest brand. Swingers first opened on Beverly Boulevard in 1993. It nearly closed for good in April 2020, then reopened that November under Wilson, who had worked there in different roles since 2010.
Wilson isn't trying to wipe out what came before. She told Eater she hopes to add a dish honoring All Day Baby's chef. "I'm really honored to take over the space that All Day Baby had," she said. The dining room will copy the original's plaid booths, mosaic tiles and wood-paneled walls. The Times adds that a jukebox and photo booth are coming in December.
"This is a new project, and it'll have a new energy, but we're still going to keep the same vibe of course."
Stephanie Wilson, speaking to the Los Angeles Times
The menu matches the Beverly location. Expect California omelets with avocado, Jack cheese, bacon and tomato, plus buttermilk pancakes, the Swingers burger with sautéed onions, and a hot turkey sandwich. Wilson's current favorite is the chilaquiles. The Times also lists tuna melts and meatloaf coming out of the window late into the night.
Two rooms with deeper roots closed in recent months
The corner at Descanso shows how quickly tenants come and go. Two recent closures show the same thing over a much longer stretch of time.
Messhall Kitchen served its last day in Los Feliz on Oct. 17, after 14 years. Eater LA's October closures roundup traces the building back further than most residents might guess. It opened in 1929 as Willard's Chicken Inn. In 1940 it became the Brown Derby, and in 1992 it became Louise's Trattoria with the Derby nightclub. Messhall followed, with a raw seafood bar, burgers, cocktails and one of the most extensive patios in the city. That puts four eras of Los Feliz dining under one roof, and a fifth is still to come.
El Condor has left 3701 Sunset Blvd. The Eastsider reported that the Mexican restaurant and cocktail bar closed after a rent increase that followed the building's change of ownership in 2025. Before El Condor, the space was El Conquistador for decades. The Los Angeles Blade dates El Conquistador to 1973. The Blade describes the two-story room as a longtime community gathering place and reports that it has stayed Latinx-owned and queer-led through every change of name. Owner Dustin Lancaster told the Blade that the response to the closing announcement was "astonishing," and that the goal was to carry on in another Silver Lake space.
Both of these rooms got a new name each time an operator moved on, and both buildings kept serving their blocks. In Messhall's case, that history goes back almost a century.
This fall's openings went into rooms that already existed
The other new arrivals follow the same pattern. Each one moved into an existing building.
- Sous Sous opened Sept. 14 inside Hotel Lucile at 1629 Griffith Park Blvd. Dinner runs 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
- Briciola, an Italian-Brazilian restaurant, opened in mid-September at 3131 W. Sunset Blvd., the same stretch of Sunset as Swingers.
- Jyan Isaac Bread is the new bakery cafe at 2800 Hyperion Ave. Eater LA set its debut for Nov. 2, with daily hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekend brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Between them, the bakery, the hotel dining room and the diner window cover the whole day. Here's how the newcomers line up by the clock for a weeknight in mid-November:
- 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Jyan Isaac Bread on Hyperion, on its announced schedule
- 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.: Sous Sous at Hotel Lucile, open later on weekends
- 6 p.m. to 3 a.m.: the Swingers takeout window at Sunset and Descanso
Once the Swingers dining room opens in December, its hours alone will cover nearly that whole spread, from 8 a.m. to 3 a.m. Wilson told Eater she's looking forward to "the foot traffic Silver Lake will bring."
Up the hill, Griffith Park's holiday season starts Nov. 20
The next big date on the calendar is in the park. L.A. Zoo Lights runs Nov. 20 through Jan. 10 on select evenings. Tickets start at $19, parking is free, and the box office is open from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m.
According to the Los Angeles Zoo, the 2026 season adds:
- New illuminated displays
- An artificial skating rink, which needs its own ticket
- A sensory-inclusive night on Dec. 8
- Pride Night on Dec. 17
The box office closes at 8:45 p.m., and the Swingers window serves until 3 a.m. That leaves plenty of time to stop on Sunset for pancakes or a tuna melt on the way home from Zoo Lights. The diner's dining room is due in December, while the lights are still on.
